Lanterns are hung everywhere. Red is the main and pretty much only color (and gold) used during the New Year because it is a symbol of blessing and luck.
What better way to celebrate New Year's than by playing Wii?! We went to a friend's house early New Year's Eve. All the kids loved watching the men play Wii while the women fixed our "finger food" dinner, which was actually more like an entire meal. I can't begin to tell you how good the velveeta/rotel dip was along with our southwestern quesadillas. Oh yum.
Before all the fireworks began at dark, people still had to celebrate with noise by using incredibly loud firecrackers. Right below our friend's balcony, they set off this long line of firecrackers, and this was the remnants. I wish I had a video of it. Oh man, it was loud. I couldn't hear myself scream.
Are these not the cutest boys in the world?! These 3 buddies are just about to a stage of actually playing with one another. It's funny, cute, and frustrating to see them take toys from each other and scream at one another just for existing, but this night they actually smiled, giggled, and even tickled one another. I see the beginnings of a great thing. I love this photo because all their faces are so stunned and uninterested. We really needed a shot of all 3 moms trying to get them to smile. We were obviously unsuccessful. I love Silas' face and Caden holding his arm. I wonder what's going through their minds.
Because of Caden's early bed time, we headed back to our place, but still had an awesome view straight from our bed! We have a little balcony off our bedroom and could watch up to 4 different fireworks shows and see the rest of the sky lit up with utter chaos. We watched one of our favorite shows in bed and would pause it when it got too loud to hear and just watched from our bed...quite the show. The fireworks in this photo are being shot off from where the senior citizen's yoga group meets. It was crazy close.
It was pretty, bright, and loud.
This seems like a pointless picture, but there's more story behind it than quality. A tradition is to set off firecrackers at every entrance to scare away spirits so the year will be blessed. Unfortunately, our complex probably has 30-40+ entrances. I can think of a much quieter way to scare away spirits :o) These firecrackers are so incredibly loud and make your heart beat really fast. You better make sure your bladder isn't full when these things go off!
So, here's an almost 6:00 minute video of the night. That might seem long, but this is an 8 hour night crammed into 6 minutes. There are several videos streamed together. In the 4th video, you'll hear me scream because I couldn't hear myself, but the video picked it up. In the 5th video, I scream, "Happy New Year," all cheesy-like. I think I just wanted it all to end. A video really can't do this justice. The cold mixed with extreme noise made me shake profusely and my heart race at times. Even car alarms were going off everywhere. Try to watch to the grand finale (well, at least the one on the video). Maybe you should be apart of all this next year to see for yourself :o) (it may take a minute to load)
The next morning, there was red gunk everywhere. I was amazed, though, how fast it was all cleaned up. I guess they have to get it clean before the next night when the streets get trashed again.
I'm not exactly sure what the peppers and tube things hanging from the trees mean, but if I had to guess, I would say it has something to do with luck and scaring away spirits.
local's home, and we had a great time talking, eating, and looking at photos. During dinner, their dog, Tiger, and Caden stared each other down. Caden loved to point and try to say dog, while Tiger just sniffed his food.
Well, that in a small nutshell, is a summary of our week's experience. We've certainly enjoyed the experience but are ready for calm nights again. Happy New Year :o)
